A Space between Dimensions: Chu Teh-I Solo Exhibition

一般意義上「秩序」是指自然秩序和社會秩序,在此特指作為藝術的秩序。在藝術系統的「秩序內外」,指涉 的是其中一致性、連續性和穩定性狀態,具有維繫秩序的規則、邊界與限制的語義。在我看來,藝術生態中, 一種是藝術傳統內部的創作,一種是之外的探索與實驗。系統內部的創作是對傳統藝術,如油畫、國畫、版畫、 雕塑等自身語言和風格的不斷提升和豐富化;之外的實驗則注重的是對現存藝術秩序的重新定義,所希望達到 的是審美觀念、方式、媒介、趣味之間的相互打破,包括對所謂藝術語言的重新定義。所以它不僅僅是對某一 畫種審美或語言的完美化,而是帶有革命性、建構性作用。而藝術家的創作就是針對個人對藝術的認知與覺知, 試圖打破現有藝術秩序的實驗行為,並在這一內外,以及介於「之間」的依存關係裡,通過多媒介的方式尋求 一種藝術的視覺轉化與昇華。

“Order” most commonly refers to a natural or societal order. In this exhibition, however, we take a closer look at order from an artistic perspective. The “order” of the artistic system is defined by a certain consistency, continuity, and stability; bound by a set of rules which maintain this order; and demarcated by boundaries and limits.

Two main branches of art can be distinguished: that within artistic tradition and that which explores and experiments. Whereas artwork from within the conventional framework refines and enriches traditional art forms, expression, and style (such as in oil painting, Chinese ink painting, printmaking, and sculpture), experimental artwork challenges and redefines the existing order, seeking to collide aesthetic concepts, methods, media, and tastes and, through that process, redefine artistic expression itself.
Thus, artistic exploration does not only entail the refining of a particular aesthetic or form of artistic expression, but rather, it fulfills a revolutionary, reconstructive purpose—to shatter the existing artistic order as a reflection of the artist’s own sense and perception of art. Hovering on the edge of the traditional artistic system, immersed in the interdependency of order and disorder, the artist, with the help of various media, attempts to achieve a visual transformation and distillation of art. Abstract art uses physical, perceptible media to artistically represent the artist’s state of mind. It is a reflection of that which the artist sees when peering inward—a materialization of the artist’s spirit and personality.
