CHOU Tai-Chun - Terrain Maps Time Travel

The attempt of the solo exhibition is to initiate the research and imagination concerning the fragmented history of the island: the humans’ needs motivate the desire which consequently leads to progress. Similarly, the history of the island features no less glances into the abovementioned scenario. Throughout the course of history, we have learned from the textbook about immigration due to the lack of resources, the arrangement of the land in the hands of the Han-Chinese and indigenous Taiwanese under the rule of the Qing Dynasty, and the colonial policy during the Japanese Occupation, but a different perspective to look into the historical events may change the route as refracted in the viewers’ eyes.

Following a chronological timeline, the solo exhibition is drawing on the camphor industry from the Qing rule to the Japanese Occupation to juxtapose the discussion on the modern environmental infrastructure constructions such as cement injection on slopes. It is within such an in-betweenness of the “frontier” – between the Han-Chinese and the indigenous Taiwanese cultures and civilizations, between the exploited and unexplored land, and between human desires and ecological order – that I constantly experience a state of shifting between the past and the present.

As for the viewpoint, we can hardly adopt a single viewpoint, given the unique historical context of the island throughout the passage of time. I would like to start the exploration from the perspective of the Other, the so-called “the other” as opposed to the historical subject, to bring up questions and ideas, like an imagined observation from the other side of the ancient maps or the question raised about the lineal historical timeline.
